intergalactic colorways

I'm guessing most of the people who stumble onto this blog already know how much of a sci-fi addict I am. I've been working through Deep Space Nine- somewhat reluctantly (I'm a trekkie- but I prefer TOS and TNG to the newer Voyager and Enterprise). Now that the end of the series is only a day or two of spinning away, I'm sadly realizing that this means I'll have seen ever Star Trek episode that has ever aired, thanks to Netflix.
There's nothing left, except to wait for the J.J. Abrams film and dig through another tv show altogether. So, is Babylon 5 any good? Has anyone worked through all of the old Battlestar Galactica? I remember when I started spinning, I was working through the original Star Trek series, finding yarn colorway inspirations in the cheesy neon styrophoam settings.

Until I find something new, I'm starting the Mad Men series- but it's definitely too distracting to work on wool while watching. The directing is too good. So please, give a spinner a good tv show shout-out. Something with dialogue and vivid visuals- but not too visually driven.

Well, you could always resort to audio books. I know of several spinners who claim to listen to them while spinning or knitting. That would open up the whole world of Trek audio books to you. Maybe your nearest public library has some.

I enjoyed Babylon 5 when it was airing, but I've found it difficult to get back into it in DVD format. Not sure why.

Have you ever been interested in Doctor Who? I watched the old series when I was a kid and the new series is great as well. And you don't need to have seen any of the older stuff to watch the new series.

There's always Red Dwarf, but that sort of sci-fi comedy isn't for everyone. I just happen to love it.

I'm also going through Deep Space Nine (using the DVR to record whatever comes on...so not really in order)!
When I start spinning full-time, I'm going to start on Dr. Who.
Have you tried Lost? It's SO much better when you watch it all back-to-back, the slow episodes just blend together.
I'd also suggest Buffy - I just finished it and loved it! Now I'm going through Angel - which is lighter-hearted, I think.

I'll be the third to suggest Dr. Who as it's quite fun and you can get a lot of it through netflix.

I'm also going to throw Ghost In The Shell:The Stand Alone Complex into the mix. It's a favorite anime of mine involving cyborgs, counter-terrorism, and the question of what it means to be human when you're mostly a machine.

jesse & i started firefly which is like sci-fi fantasy "space cowboy" kinda themed. bit cheesy, like following a bunch of han-solos. the theme music is awful, but so far i'm really liking the show content. it's made by the creator of buffy so if you liked that, you'll prolly like this too. lots of quirky kick-ass lady characters.

we are also watching the sopranos and will be starting mad men soon. and we also want to check out nip/tuck. i watched the first season of the wire- but since at the time i still lived in baltimore (murdermore) i was too scared to watch the rest of the seasons! very realistic!

hope that helps!! xox :)

I would suggest The Wire, I know it isn't sci-fi at all, but it is awesome, it is my knitting/spinning show and there are a ton of seasons. I also love six feet under and big love. :)

fallingblue, I actually just downloaded a few gigs of audiobooks! I've been listening to them when I dye, or when I'm working away from the tv. I'm definitely going to give Red Dwarf a go- I just watched an episode and I adore it!

Tara- I saw the first season of Lost, and forgot to continue it! haha! I also watched three seasons of Buffy, but lost interest sometime during the 4th.

WingedStrategos- I'm definitely going to look into Dr. Who now! Thanks for the recommendations!

Laila- I just put The Wire on my Netflix list- my husband lived in Baltimore for several years and he's been itching to see it. I never got through Firefly's pilot. Maybe I should give it another chance. And I LOVE The Sopranos!

Oooohh, a subject I know well!

For history:
Deadwood
Rome
The Tudors

For silliness/humor:
Dead Like Me
Flight of the Conchords

For sci-fi:
Firefly
Supernatural (LOVE IT!!)

For intrigue:
Alias

For interesting stories:
This American Life

Uhhhhh...my excuse is that we don't have cable. Yeah, that's the ticket. :)

Nicole, I don't have cable either- I'd much rather rent, borrow, or buy my favorites :D I love Dead Like Me and This American Life! I've worked through both of those, and I'm really considering The Tudors. Thank you so much for your picks!

I really liked Firefly too, but would have a hard time spinning while watching- love the cinematography! I'm halfway through the new BSG's and I've seen a few episodes of Dr. Who- which is a really fun show.
I've heard that Deadwood is awesome and full of great dialog (good for spinning!)..Thanks Nicole for reminding me to put it on my queue!
Couldn't get past the first episode of The Tudors though- almost no dialog, none of the characters were properly introduced- anyone know if it gets any better?

Liz, I'm with you! We just rent all the TV we want to watch. Plus, there's always PBS...I'm addicted to Masterpiece Classics, even though they come on at 9 p.m. on Sundays.

Have you seen the Dead Like Me "movie" (aka 2 hour straight-to-DVD episode) that was released a week or so ago? It's pretty good and ties up some loose ends. Bothered me that Daisy wasn't played by Laura Harris, though...that just felt wrong.

Lacey, I think you might be right, now that I'm thinking about the Tudors in terms of spinning...the visuals are rich but the dialogue isn't very dense, so...problematic. Deadwood, though...the dialogue is great!!

I'm a short-forward-draw spinner and can get away with not looking at my work most of the time. Still have problems with foreign films and subtitles + spinning, though! :)

I have no Sci-Fi recommendations... but I second what someone said about Dead Like Me (I love that show and even love the straight to DVD episode... don't love everything they did to it, but love that they did it)

I recommend Dexter. Seasons one and two are on DVD and I think season 3 comes out soon on DVD and they have already announced that season 4 will air - yay!
